The film reproduces the era’s atmosphere through the lens of queen Mary’s state of mind. She feels compassion for the misery of the people’s grief caused by conflicts within the royal family, the disillusionment of unfulfilled love and, above all, the unshakable hope for a better future for her adoptive homeland.
